17-4-24: Putting On Burley Summer Festival
Chrissie Smith and Val Smyth, leading members of the Burley Summer Festival Committee gave an interesting talk about the origins of the festival, and what is involved in putting on today's festival, which so many of us thoroughly enjoy, but seem to take for granted!! One of the main things that came across was that if people didn't volunteer there simply could not be a festival at all - quite an eye opener, and it was interesting to know there are so many things people could volunteer for, and that they would enjoy doing for a change in routine - from being creative on the Committee, to spending an hour shaking a collection bucket, to helping with road closures, and of course the centre piece that has become the Classic Car Show.
"?? - AND THEN - half way through "many" PCSO's from West Yorkshire Police in Shipley, dropped-in -??" Later on, whilst waiting for a sandwich, nearby chatter was overheard "..Did you see all those police raid the Men's Shed!!..."
They explained it was part of an initiative to get out and about around their whole patch and to mix with the varied communities, and today was "Burley's turn", sorry to those members not at the Shed today who missed out, so a picture as evidence will have to do!
