24-09-2025: Visit - Away day to Ripon Part Two - Ripon Workhouse and Prison & Police Museums
Following our morning visit to Ripen Men's Shed, our members spent the afternoon at the Ripon Workhouse and Prison & Police Museums.
We started our visit at the Workhouse Museum and Garden. Led by our tour guide Richard, we learnt about the history of small local workhouses and the reasons for building of this larger workhouse in Ripon. Richard talked about the daily life and the types of jobs people who lived in the workhouse did, this was followed by a tour of the buildings and garden.
The group then made the short walk to the Prison & Police Museum where we were met by Katy our tour guide. Katy talked about the history of the building and showed us various police artefacts, including police uniforms and items they carried with them whilst on patrol. We then had time to explore the building and visit the prison cells.
A very interesting and enjoyable day was had by all.
