16-09-2026: Video - Aircraft Heavy Maintenance
At the Shed's second meeting of September, a good turnout of members enjoyed a very interesting video about Aircraft Heavy Maintenance.
The video focused on a 16 year old Air France Boeing 777 which was spending five weeks undergoing heavy maintenance. Aircraft heavy maintenance, or base maintenance, is an extensive, scheduled overhaul where large parts of an airplane are disassembled, inspected, and repaired in a specialized hangar.
In this check, the aircraft's interior cabin items were removed and the aircrafts skin was checked for corrosion, all the electrical cables checked and replaced if required and toilets repaired. New seating and entertainment systems were then fitted, windows replaced and over head lockers refurbished.
Outside checks included repairs to the fuselage, landing gear overall, and wing parts serviced. The teams conducting these checks have to work twenty four hours a day, seven days a week in order to complete it in time.
Our members enjoyed the video which was then followed by butties and some lively conversations about what they had seen.
