28-05-2025: Veolia Leeds Recycling & Energy Recovery Facility
Shed members were treated to an enjoyable and informative visit to the Veolia Leeds Recycling & Energy Recovery Facility.
Veolia in partnership with Leeds City Council recycle all of the cities household general waste ( not recyclable waste) in order for the council to reduce the need for Landfill sites. The waste is then burnt and this produces hot water and steam to heat homes, council buildings and hospitals in the Leeds area.
Plus they also generate electricity which supplies approximately 22,000 homes.
The site which opened in November 2016 at a cost of £148 million has a 25 year contract with Leeds City Council to provide them with these services.
A tour of the facilities is free to residents of the Leeds post codes.
Finally a big thank you to our driver Kathy from Otley Action For Older People and Helen from Veolia who looked after us and was our tour guide.
