07-01-2026: Talk - Unsung hero's (females) in science Mick Richings
For the Shed's first meeting of 2026, Mick Richings, from Burley in Wharfedale, gave the members a very interesting, informative and illustrative talk about unsung female hero's in science.
Science is often considered a male-dominated field. But the field is also rich with female scientists who made important discoveries. They broke boundaries and helped change the world. Far too often, women are left off the roster, even though they’ve long made significant strides in science — including in eras when they were excluded from formal education and careers in the field of science. It was only until recently that female scientists have come out of the shadows of history.
There are has been many famous female scientists, Mick's talk focused on two of them, Dame Vere Stephanie "Steve" Shirley, IT pioneer, entrepreneur and Britain's first Ambassador of Philanthropy, and Margaret Hamilton, an American computer scientist, who worked for NASA on the Apollo space program.
Many thanks to Mick for a very good talk in front of a packed meeting at the Bowling Pavilion.
