4-03-2026: Talk - Friends of Ilkley Moor
Owen Wells, Chairman of "The Friends of Ilkley Moor", gave us a fascinating and informative talk about the many aspects of Ilkley Moor, which is known as an Urban Common, a site of special interest, and a part of the South Pennines Special Protection Area.
Please take a moment to watch Owen's video in the section below.
Being a heather moorland Ilkley Moor has a rare habitat which attracts and sustains red grouse, short eared owls, lapwing, golden plover and curlew, because of the abundance of tall heather clumps and shorter native vegetation. In addition and especially over spring, large numbers of waders return to breed, as well as whinchat and cuckoo who migrate here from Africa.
Owen explained how FOIM are a long standing voluntary and democratic group of people, who all love this moorland, and wish to see it improved, conserved so it can be enjoyed by future generations.
FOIM offer opportunities for people to become involved with varied tasks, including volunteer days for the local community to carry out conservation activities on the Moor.
Please visit the Friends of Ilkley Moor website where you can learn much more, get in touch with the group, or make a donation to support their work.
There are recommended Heritage Walks available to download.
There are many organised Events and Learning Opportunities which people of all ages and abilities can take part in.
