02-04-2025: Petanque & Bowls
On a lovely sunny spring day 20 members of Burley Men's Shed took on the challenges of learning to play Petanque and Crown Green Bowls.
The shed is blessed to be located at the Bowls Pavilion in Grange Park, where there is a well prepared league-standard Bowling Green and, since the new pitch was established last year, we now also have a full size 3-lane Petanque pitch.
** Petanque - is a form of lawn bowling originating in France, usually played on rough ground using steel balls. Alternatively, for more information try Wikipedia
** Big thanks to Brian Wheeler from Burley Bowling Club for preparing the green, and providing all the equipment we needed to enjoy a great taster session, which has now become an annual event on our calendar.
** Big thanks also to Barbara Greaves and her friendly volunteers, who did a sterling job of preparing the Petanque pitch and then teaching members all about the game and its rules, as for most of us it was the first time we had played the game. Anyone can and make use of the pitch by booking-out a (free) set of Boules, which are available from nearby Dacre Son & Hartley, Cockpit Farm Tea Rooms and The Red Lion. You can find other local Petanque clubs at: Yorkshire Petanque
