22-10-24: Recognising Potential Early Signs of Cancer
This Men's Health Awareness event held in Salem Church Hall in Burley, was the first in a joint venture between Burley Men’s Shed (BMS) and Wharfedale Men's Shed, Otley (WMS). It was born out of personal experiences within WMS, who felt that outcomes may have been different for their friends if we all had a much better awareness of the EARLY SIGNS of cancer.
The emphasis of the Event was thus on "Prevention and Early Intervention", by recognising symptoms or changes which are NOT normal for you.
The talk was given by Fraser Corry from Macmillan Cancer Support, accompanied by Stewart Manning, a retired GP who volunteers on behalf of Macmillan and St. Gemma's Hospice, and Dr Janet Kyriakides, one of our local GP's with a special interest in hoe diet & lifestyle can lower the risk of cancer, and its recurrence.
With the speakers’ detailed knowledge and extensive experience of the subject matter in many different situations, the talk was able to provide the necessary information to enable those attending to know what to look for within the many pains and niggles that we all start to suffer as we age.
The presenters responded to a number of diverse questions on cancer issues during the Q&A sessions that were built into the timetable.
Useful and informative materials, together with signposting to helpful resources, was made available at the venue and in the take-away materials that each person attending were provided with.
